School Readiness Kits and Summer Reading Packs
United Way of the Wine Country recognizes the importance of early childhood education and is committed to supporting local families help their children be prepared to learn.
- School Readiness Kits target low to moderate income families with children ages 3-5 to help ensure they are ready to learn. Our interactive kits are divided into four sections and include more than 80 activities for parents and caregivers to engage their children at home. Each section has helpful tips on how children learn and what parents and caregivers can do to help. Kits also include books, activities, crayons, and safe scissors for young children. United Way of the Wine Country’s School Readiness Kits program has been recognized as a promising practice by Upstream Investments.
- Summer Reading Packs are intended to minimize the “summer reading slide”, a documented phenomenon where student reading skills decline over the summer while not in school and with limited access to books. Summer Reading Packs include six age appropriate books and two bookmarks plus an important letter to the parent/caregiver emphasizing the importance of summer reading and encouraging them to fill out a log highlighting the books their child reads during the summer.
