Summer Reading Packs are filled with six age appropriate books and are intended to minimize the “summer reading slide”, a documented phenomenon where student reading skills decline over the summer while not in school and with limited to no access to books. United Way and our Women United partnered with Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE) to distribute Summer Reading Packs to 900 kindergarten through 3rd grade students in the Wright School District in 2017. In collaboration with the school district, books were chosen by reading specialists at three of this district’s elementary schools.
The Summer Reading Pack not only includes six books but also two bookmarks and a parent/caregiver letter emphasizing the importance of summer reading. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to fill out a log to show the books their child read during the summer, and those filling out the log will be entered to a drawing with a chance to win fun prizes for the family. Parents/caregivers can access this log by clicking here.
