Local Community Lives United

Santa Rosa, CA (July 9, 2008) Thanks to the generosity of local companies and individuals in Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake counties, United Way of the Wine Country achieved a record-breaking fundraising year. A loyal donor base responded generously, enabling the nonprofit to raise $4.25 million, $350,000 above goal.

In addition to financial support, local residents inspired by United Way volunteered over 12,000 hours of their time to benefit the community, providing over $250,000 worth of volunteer time. United Way’s partners and volunteers are excited by the 40 year-old, local nonprofit’s new direction, which encourages everyone to Live United by giving, advocating or volunteering.

“This year was a transformational year. The overwhelming generosity of our community means recognition that a challenging economy impacts those who are most vulnerable, and that United Way is making a difference in their lives. This year, our community once again succeeded in working to advance the common good,” said United Way of the Wine Country President and CEO Walter Collins.

United Way is focused on addressing the underlying causes of critical problems by focusing on four main areas—supporting youth development, strengthening families, maintaining senior independence and resolving crises—with the goal of creating long-lasting changes that get results and prevent problems from happening in the first place.

United Way’s workplace giving results included a 14% increase by two of Sonoma County’s largest employers, the County of Sonoma and Agilent Technologies. United Way’s 2007-2008 Spirit of the Wine Country winner, Medtronic, increased its campaign by 95%.

Mendocino County employers also had much to celebrate, as the business community contributed more than $100,000 to United Way for the first time.

Board Chair Steve Farmiloe of Vantreo Insurance Brokerage COO expressed his gratitude, “I am amazed and encouraged by the thousands of people, from school children to CEOs, who believe in the good work United Way is doing in our community. We’re tremendously thankful to everyone that helped us achieve this goal.”
