18th Annual Day of Caring

Over 1,000 volunteers turned out for United Way’s 18th Annual Day of Caring on September 10th. Volunteers worked on 85 projects for over 50 local agencies in Sonoma and Mendocino Counties.

“Day of Caring makes a tremendous difference in lives of thousands of people throughout our community. This year, more than 6,500 hours of labor were donated, valued at more than   $125,000,” explained United Way President and CEO Walter Collins.

Day of Caring allows volunteers to experience first-hand the needs in our community and then roll-up their sleeves and help. The experience, which started with a morning rally and concluded with dozens of completed projects, left volunteers feeling energized and deeply connected to their community. Day of Caring is also the kickoff for the United Way’s annual campaign.

Some of this year’s projects included:

  • Updating the play structure at Women’s Recovery Services
  • Landscaping and painting at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Santa Rosa.
  • Clean-up and landscaping of Hearn House, which provides transitional housing for veterans
  • Fence and window installation, deck repair and landscaping at Committee on the Shelterless
  • Site organization and clean-up at the YWCA of Sonoma County
